2008 #7 - Random Notes of a Cautious Clicker

My Google sidebar contains a list of dumb notes. bake! pancake! I didn't do either.

Studio 60! 30 rock! I still haven't managed to find time to watch either.

wl - lt, acgt, cfetbl, lnybkt, sndsys, bsidetbl. I do know what they all are, but how half of them were ever significant enough for the wl (that's a wishlist, people), I don't know. I need to add a 42"plstv to the list too. Damn consumerism.

i love silhouettes! It's true, but did I need to write it down? More to the point, why didn't I remove it?

Below that, we have "cautious clicker"!

This is the one I want to talk about briefly. I am a cautious clicker. I see a mouse click as a mousedown and a mouseup event*. Normal people don't. They know that if they're pressing that button, they want the computer to do it. Frequently, I change my mind after the downward motion, and have to find a way to ensure that the upward motion doesn't end up representing a click. This has saved me from navigating away from important flash-based applications many times.

I used to practice this all the time in Google Reader, until one day my true intentions were suddenly being misinterpreted as a drag!

I am, a cautious clicker. You?

*Ironically anybody needing to use these two events is probably going to thwart me, and act on the mousedown, because in many cases a click event will be used instead of a mouseup.

bike tyre(s)! Still bald as hell.
acoustic guitar! Still broken, still not bought a new one.
two shoes! I actually did buy some shoes this weekend.
coat! I've had this coat for far too long.
buy mark something! I really should, he got me a t-shirt. I just have no idea what to get him.
tax in post! Not anymore, it's in my windscreen.
mot! Passed last weekend with no work required. First time ever!
socks! Some new socks wouldn't hurt, but so hard to find ones big enough. You know what they say, whoever they are.

This week in the world of simple goals - No new photos. Really stupid because I visited Birmingham this evening to check out an area that had been recommended to me, and you might rightly think taking some photos would have been an opportunity. I would have to agree, but of course, I didn't have my camera.

In challenging goals - I have a February song, and have already recorded half of it. Very different to the Jan song, and I really enjoyed working on it. Doing great towards work goals, still aiming for hitting the goals that no longer interest me for financial gain. Thinking about my career is about all i'm doing at the moment. Exercise had to wait last week as I had a nasty cold. It's subsided to the point now where I must swim tomorrow, and I will.

- New challenging goal - I need to work out my budget. I've tried not to for the longest time. It's so hard to do it in an all encompassing manner, but the fact is, I really can't tell whether I can survive long term after making various changes, such as moving closer to work, keeping my car, but taking a train. I have this nagging feeling that although my bank balance is going up each month, it's not by as much as it should be. That said, I should remind myself that i'm saving a decent amount now, but then do I really want to change that, and if not, don't I need to disregard that money?

The updated manifesto:

The Wasted Space

1. I won't write about checking the list whilst checking the list anymore. Waste.
2. I won't detail anything achieved more than once if nothing has changed. Waste!

The Easy Stuff

1. I will stick to my weekday food and drink ethic as set out previously.
2. I will stick to wasting less weekday time playing fake poker.
3. I will continue watching 2 or more films each week.
4. I will take photos everywhere I go (high bar remains).
5. I will buy at least one more work shirt by the end of February.
6. I will move to Birmingham before the end of April.
7. I will stay in touch with my friends weekly.

The Challenging Stuff

1. I will continue to write a song each month.
2. I will continue to work towards my set work goals.
3. I will continue to rethink my career inside and outside my current role weekly.
4. I will find the time to manage a 3 times a week exercise schedule.
5. I will work out my budget before the end of February.
